Brew Batch 16: Pliny the Elder DIPA

I missed documenting the past few brews, picking it up again with batch 16. I really do like brewing Pliny. And just like the last time, the dry hopping will be supplemented with generous additions of whole hops from my personal garden.

I got some new batteries for my DeWalt drill since the last brew which was used to make quick work of milling the 13 pounds of 2 row. Rice hulls were added to minimize the risk of a stuck mash during sparging. There is currently 30 minutes remaining of the mash during which the wort is continuously recirculated with my Brewzilla pump.

Had issues with wordpress during mash and sparge water went to 195 during this distraction. While raising mashout to 170F, added ice cubes to sparge water to lower to 170F.

Sparge going well. The rice hulls added to the grain bill and mixed well before adding to the mash water worked well. Sparge time was about 0.5 hours.

Summer is home-grown hops harvest time. This is a great time to add a super large dose of dry hops to the beer after racking the yeast out of the fermenter after completion of primary fermentation.

While I am very energy consumption conscience, note the spike in usage on August 14, brew day. Complements of Brewzilla, my electric brewing rig.
